  • Friends that are not scared of the dark!
There are a few definitions you need to be aware of before we start!

Ghost Hunt - A location that you plan to investigate.
Residual Haunting - A haunting that seems to be repeating itself.  Residual haunting is known to be sort of a playback of the spirits life before.  They don't seem to be aware of you, just what they were doing AT that time.  The apparitions caught on film are not current, but "recordings" of a time before.
Apparitions -  These are figures, shadows, or actual sighting of spirits.
EVP - Electronic Voice Phenomena is when you take recordings when you are investigating and ask questions.  When you play back your recordings, sometimes you might hear something you did not when investigating.

If you want to start paranormal investigations, you need to know the basics before you start.  The tools I listed above are the essential and simple tools you need in order to have the best results for ghost hunting.  You should find a location that has had previous paranormal accounts to get the best results. First of all you need to ask for permission from the owner of the property before visiting the site or investigating .  Starting to investigate paranormal activity is not really that hard, but you must be careful.  Always bring a friend, and a cell phone for emergencies.

You should scout out the location in DAYLIGHT before ever investigating to get a feel for the place.  In the dark, you may have no clue where you are going and what you are heading for.  Scooping out the area ahead of time can really benefit you in many ways.

Go with your friends or have them meet you at the location.  Always ask for a blessing and for protection before entering the site.  Walk around the area and get a feel for the place, and let the spirits get a feel for you.   Start to set up your equipment such as tripods, motion detectors, cameras, and what not.

Next, start to talk! Tell them who you are, and that you just want to talk to them.  Introduce yourself and your friends.  Start off slow by asking simple questions with the voice recording tools.  Remember that just because you don't hear the answer - doesn't mean you won't when you play back your recordings.  While your doing this, have someone film and take pictures!

While your investigating be sure to note anything strange and unusual that may happen.  This can be sounds, feelings, emotions, strange sightings, and changes in temperature.

Additional tips you should remember:
  • Log every event that happens with the time.
  • If you are with a group of people, make sure that you know where everyone is in the group so you don't contaminate the investigation.
  • You should log every little sneeze from your investigators to match with your paranormal events.  You don't want lines to get crossed.
  • Keep an eye on the time, and keep your ID with you at all times.  (Just in case police should ask what you are doing.)
  • Have at least two people analyze every bit of footage and information you collected after your investigation.  ENJOY and HAVE FUN!
  • If you or your group are responsible for or setting up a lot of electronic gear make sure you do a double check and make sure all of the equipment is accounted for and present, it would be very expensive to replace.
  • Always call or visit the owner of the property to thank them or let them know your results, as a common courtesy.  They may invite you back.
  • Sometimes you may find it helpful to check the library or local courthouse for past owners and history or records of the property to verify your investigation results.
